Roadside puts Joshua Live in theaters October 30

Roadside Attractions will release Sight & Sound’s Joshua Live in movie theaters nationwide beginning October 30. The companies announced it Wednesday. Tickets are already on sale.

This is a filmed stage show, shot in front of a live audience on Sight & Sound’s 300-foot wraparound stage, with an original gospel-infused score and live animals the release lists as camels, horses, donkeys, llamas, pigs, sheep, and goats. It is the second theatrical from Roadside and Sight & Sound after A Great Awakening. Sight & Sound is using the date to mark its 50th year of stage productions in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Branson, Missouri.

A stage, then a Friday

Wednesday’s release says the story follows Israel after the wilderness, with Joshua replacing Moses and one fortified city left before the Promised Land. Creative producer Ryan Miller’s quote is aimed at people who only remember the trumpets: the walls of Jericho fall after the Israelites “learn to arm themselves with trust.” Roadside co-presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff said they had already seen a Sight & Sound stage show while working on A Great Awakening, and that Joshua Live is “a beautiful cinematic capture” they want in cinemas again. Katie Miller, the company’s vice president of brand development, said the point is families who cannot travel to the two theaters.

Sight & Sound’s company note says more than 1.5 million people a year attend the Lancaster and Branson houses, and that the move into feature films debuted at No. 2 in theaters. Take that ranking as the company’s own line. Wednesday’s release dates October 30, puts tickets at JoshuaLiveMovie.com, and leaves the screen count out.

The open question is whether a filmed Jericho plays like a Roadside event or like a church-night booking that fills some auditoriums and vanishes from the chart. October 30 is close enough that the theater list should show up before the trumpets do.
