Sony opens a Brazilian Flywheel on 554 screens

Sony Pictures opened Flywheel: Ignition of the Soul in U.S. theaters on Friday. The Numbers’ theater-count table for October 16 lists the film in 554 theaters.

It is a Brazilian remake of Flywheel, the 2003 movie that started Alex and Stephen Kendrick. Alessandro Barros directed this version. Alex Kendrick wrote it and appears in the cast. Mario Bregieira plays Noah Silva, a used-car salesman in Rio de Janeiro whose shortcuts start to cost him his wife and his son. Pérola Faria plays his wife. The picture was shot in Portuguese. The U.S. release carries an English dub.

How it got a U.S. Friday

Affirm announced the October 16 date on April 22. That release said Brazil and Latin America would get the film in September, a month before the U.S. date. Deadline’s April story tied the remake to The Forge, which opened at No. 1 in Brazil and reported $9 million there. The official site says the English-language voices include Brett Varvel, Masey McLain, Todd Terry, and Lara Silva. Box Office Mojo lists the U.S. rating as PG and the running time as 1 hour 50 minutes. Mojo does not yet have a domestic gross.

The open question is whether 554 theaters is the whole U.S. run. Affirm has not published a Friday number, and the weekend has not closed. The next chart will show what those rooms did.
